The Oxygen Desaturation Index for Severity Assessment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Associated With Cigarette Smoking

Objectives: Nicotine stimulates release of neurotransmitters that regulate the sleep-wake cycle and thereby leads to insomnia. Smoking is associated with upper airway distress; however, its role in severe sleep-related breathing disorders remains controversial. In this study, we investigated effects smoking on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).Methods: We 1,163 patients diagnosed OSA who underwent polysomnography between March 2020 July 2022. recorded details including status (current, former, non-smoker), demographics, questionnaire-related data, findings performed univariate analysis compare these variables smokers non-smokers. also analyzed correlation severity. The risk severity was determined using logistic regression analysis.Results: Current former included 461 male (49.1%) 10 female (4.4%) (<i>p</i>=0.001). Smokers had a high apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) oxygen desaturation (ODI) (<i>p</i><0.001), arousal (<i>p</i>=0.001), daytime sleepiness (indicated by Epworth Sleepiness Scale, <i>p</i><0.001). observed no AHI number cigarettes smoked per day duration smoking. Logistic after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, alcohol consumption showed factor ODI (ODI >15, odds ratio 1.33, <i>p</i>=0.04), independent smoking.Conclusions: Controversy regarding has currently not been definitively determined. However, our results provide new evidence support association ODI, which few studies have date.
